"Current estimates are that >5 million children have been born by assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) since the introduction of these treatment modalities in the late 1970s. Systematic collection of data related to the short-term perinatal outcome only began a decade later and the Society of Assisted Reproductive technology only published its first annual U.S. in vitro fertilization (IVF) data in 1988. In addition, since 1997, the U.S. Center of Disease Control and Prevention has published an annual report on the outcome of IVF programs."
