Titre : Puerto Rican Cultural Beliefs: Influence on Infant Feeding Practices in Western New York (2000) Auteurs : B Higgins, Auteur Type de document : Article : texte imprimé Dans : Journal of Transcultural Nursing (Vol.11 n°1, Janvier 2000) Article en page(s) : pp.19-30 Langues: Anglais Index. décimale : SO.4 (Immigration) Catégories : Culture ; Etats-Unis ; Ethnologie ; Hispano-américain ; Immigration ; Nutrition du nourrisson Résumé : The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural beliefs
and practices of Puerto Rican families that influence feeding
practices and affect the nutritional status of infants and
youngchildren. The goal of the study was to outline strategies
that would enable nurses toprovide culturally congruent care
for this population. Culture care theory guided the research,
and an ethnonursing methodology was used. From interviews
with 10 key and 5 general informants, 11 universal and 2
diverse themes were abstracted. The dimensions of kinship,
cultural values, lifeways, and philosophical beliefs were
found to influence Puerto Rican infant feeding practices. The
cultural belief that big is healthy was found to be integrally
related to cultural feeding practices. Strategies are suggested to facilitate provision of culturally congruent care for Puerto Rican infants and children in an ambulatory setting.

Titre : Infant feeding styles of West Indian women (1999) Auteurs : Karen Corbett, Auteur Type de document : Article : texte imprimé Dans : Journal of Transcultural Nursing (Vol.10 n°1, Janvier 1999) Article en page(s) : pp.22-30 Note générale : PMID: 10476149 Langues: Anglais Index. décimale : ET.1 (Etude ethnographique) Catégories : Alimentation au biberon ; Ethnologie ; Inde ; Nutrition du nourrisson Résumé : An ethnographic field study design was used to explore infant feeding among 20 West Indian women on the island of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. Two styles of infant feeding emerged from the data, "older style" and "contemporary style." Three patterns of combined breast and bottle feeding were identified: day/night, supplemental, and random. Older style mothers followed a day/night pattern, whereas contemporary style mothers used a supplemental pattern. A folk explanatory model of infant feeding was constructed and included why infants were fed in certain ways, as well as the meaning of feeding practices. The health care system had an impact on both styles of infant feeding through hospital practices and provision of formula through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.
